15 Minute DIY Essential Oil Deodorant--That Really Works!

Happy Monday, Friends! When I shared the photo of my latest project with Dear Firstborn, her response was, "It's sooo crunchy granola, but I love you for it!" Can you relate? To be honest, once upon a time seeing a homemade deodorant recipe might have caused me to roll my eyes, but after an unsuccessful quest to find an aluminium-free product, I resorted to my usual do-it-yourself tactic. This fragrant and thrifty recipe can be whipped up in 15 minutes or less...

You're probably aware that most deodorants still contain aluminium despite concerns about their link to Alzheimer's disease. I have used aluminium-free deodorants for some time, but in the last few years, they aren't working as well for me. I think I've tried them all and they just don't absorb odor! After searching online and finding less than satisfactory reviews for pricey versions. I decided to make my own. There are a variety of recipes out there, but since I have sensitive skin, I tweaked my own version using the fewest ingredients.

Before sharing it with you, I have been using it for a few weeks--during the hottest part of our Texas summer--and IT WORKS! All you need is coconut oil, baking soda, and your choice of essential oil! TIP: Select an antibacterial essential oil like lavender, orange, lemongrass, tea tree, peppermint, rosemary, eucalyptus, or geranium--or combine a few like I did.

If you haven't used natural deodorants before, you should be aware that it will not keep your underarms completely dry. However, I can honestly say this deodorant absorbs some of the moisture and it does prevent odor. I have heard some people are sensitive to baking soda, but I haven't had any skin irritation. Ready to make your own? Start by mixing 3 tablespoons of coconut oil with several drops of the essential oil of your choice. (I used 2 drops of rosemary and 5 drops of orange.) TIP: It is more economical to buy 4 oz therapeutic grade oils on Amazon which are comparable in cost to smaller store brands. I bought my rosemary oil in 2016. (You can find product links near the bottom of the post.)

Next, add 1/2 cup baking soda and blend until creamy. Pour it into a 4 oz jelly jar or air tight container. This may seem like a small amount, but I've barely made a dent in the top layer of mine after 2-3 weeks! I simply dab it on my fingertip and blend it under my arm. I haven't had this issue, but if the mixture starts to solidify, leave the container in the hot shower or add a few drops of almond oil until it's creamy again. (You don't want it to be too oily or liquidy.) TIP: My lid label is from the dollar store!

  1. I'm pinning this, Cecilia, and hope you will mention continued effectiveness (or not) in a follow up. The fact that it's working in TX right now is remarkable enough!

  2. I've also been searching for a good aluminum-free option that doesn't leave me stinky at the end of the day! I might have to give yours a try! :)

  3. Great idea. My son has always used deodorants rather than anti-perspirants as they ALWAYS contain aluminum. I would miss my wind-up container, though!
