Happy Wednesday Friends! It hit 90 degrees here this past weekend and unfortunately I have already noticed some mosquitoes. Store bought repellents are not only expensive but most are full of chemicals, so I make my own. It's easy, actually smells good and yes, it works!
You'll need witch hazel, spray bottles and the following essential oils: citronella, lemongrass, peppermint and eucalyptus. If you haven't purchased essential oils before, consider them a worthwhile investment. I use them to make linen spray and household cleaner. I like to use travel size spray bottles so I can scatter them around the garden. Depending on the size you choose, this recipe will make 3-4 small bottles. {See the bottom of the post for links for suggested essential oils.}
Just pour the witch hazel into a pitcher and add 8 drops of citronella, 6 drops of lemon grass, 4 drops of peppermint and 2 drops of eucalyptus. Stir well and pour into bottles. All of these oils are natural insect repellents--no more stinky sprays! Also, it's not greasy or sticky like most repellents, but for maximum protection reapply often. Bye-bye bugs!

MY HEARTFELT THANKS TO THE FOLLOWING FOR FEATURING THIS POST:
So timely Cecilia ... Lots of mosquitoes here ... not only in the yard, but they love coming in the workshop. We are burning citronella oil and that helps but would love to make the essential oil spray. Will have to see where I can get the oils locally. Thanks for formula.

I have heard of making bug repellent with essential oils, but have never tried making it myself. I would love to make some for when my family and I go camping. Thanks for the wonderful inspiration, my friend. Happy hugs to you!
ReplyDeleteThis is wonderful, I will definitely be trying this! Black flies are terrible here in NH and mosquito are as well. I have recently begun to learn using essential oils. Thanks for posting this! Can't wait to try making my own insect repellant.

ReplyDeleteOh wonderful! I love Essential Oils. I will be making this as mosquitos love me (but I don't love them!).
ReplyDeleteI have heard of using essential oils for bug repellent. Are you spraying them in the garden or on yourself? They sound like they smell great!
ReplyDeleteThis sounds good enough to use a scent, never mind insect repellent. It's a must try for me! Mimi xxx
