Happy Wednesday, Friends! Remember the fabulous vintage thrift store basket I shared Friday? I wanted a special way to display it and since my wall space is limited and I've already shared a fall centerpiece and mantel, I decided to use it to craft a nontraditional fall wreath. I couldn't be happier with the results...
To create a similar look, here's what you'll need:
- A large shallow basket
- A chalkboard OR tray and chalkboard paint or peel-n-stick paper*
- Fishing line
- Simple faux foliage
- Chalk or chalk marker
- A burlap bow or ribbon
If you already have some type of chalkboard that's slightly smaller than your basket, you're one step ahead ;) Also, the chalkboard doesn't have to be round. Before remembering that I had this round tray that complemented the basket size, I was ready to use a rectangular silver tray chalkboard that also looked cute. Instead of painting it, I used peel-n-stick chalkboard paper I had on hand. Start by tracing a circle the size of the tray's center onto the chalkboard paper. I had a smaller tray that was the perfect size to trace. Of course, chalkboard paint is an option too. {Links for suggested supplies will be provided.}
Complete your chalkboard by sticking the adhesive paper onto the tray. Next, center the tray on the basket and use fishing line to attach it. Secure it by double knotting at the top, bottom and on each side.

The fishing line is barely visible. You have to look closely to see the four places I attached it, which is another reason I like to use it.
These mini fall wreaths were also from Friday's Find. I picked them up specifically for crafting. To keep it simple and add just a touch of color, I chose only one to decorate my wreath.
If you snip the wire around the floral ring, it will unwind it and then there will be several single pieces to add to one side of the wreath. Bend the wire stems to tuck into the edge of the chalkboard.
Last, add a bow and your choice of fall greeting! *One note about using chalkboard paper in humid areas: Several hours after hanging and photographing the wreath on my front door, the paper that was previously perfectly smooth, looked very bumpy. I brought it inside, thinking I would need to paint the tray instead. However, since I haven't had this happen before, I smoothed out all the bumps and decided to try hanging it again the following morning. It's been smooth ever since, but I did want to share the experience in case you prefer to use chalkboard paint.
That looks great, Cecilia!
ReplyDeleteI remember those large round baskets...still see them occasionally at the thrift store. This is a super cute way to upcycle it. Looks great!
ReplyDeleteCecilia, I've been trying to remember what brand of paint you used for your front door. It looks like it has held up well. Could you remind me of what it is? Thanks!
What a cute idea! Hugs and blessings, Cindy
