If  you hopped over after visiting Gail from Purple Hues and Me, welcome! Isn't her wreath lovely? I scored this wonderful old picnic basket at an estate sale for $2! Now y'all know I whitewash almost all of my thrifted baskets, but I decided to keep the original finish for this project...except for the lid. Before I share my how-to, here's a quick before and after. Would you believe the gorgeous hydrangea is a decal from Dollar Tree?

To give your own basket a glow-up, start by wiping it down with a soft cloth that you have sprayed with a 1:4 vinegar and water mixture. Next, tape any hardware before painting the inside of the lid. Then, after allowing it to dry thoroughly, paint/whitewash the outside of the lid. (I use 2:1 paint/water ratio for whitewash.) Last, experiment with the placement of your decal before removing the backing and pressing firmly to apply. (TIP: When applying adhesive decals, I do not add any type of protective finish that you might use with paint or non-adhesive crafts. This prevents the decal from pulling away from the surface over time.)

  6. Oh Cecelia, this is beautiful! I love that you just white washed the top, leaving the basket brown adds contrast and really makes the top stand out. The hydrangea decal is so pretty! And I can't believe you got the decal at Dollar Tree! Wonderful transformation~

  8. Beautiful! I love that decal. I've seen large roses there before, but no hydrangeas. I might need to go back and peek for fall.
