5 Thrifty Ways to Create a Cozy Fall Home

Happy Monday, Friends and hello, October! Have you started decorating for fall yet? Changing decor for the season doesn't have to be an expensive endeavor. Today I'm sharing five thrifty ways I cozy up my home for fall featuring some of my favorite repurposed, upcycled, and DIY projects for the season...

5 thrifty tips for a cozy fall home

Layer & Pair

One of the simplest ways to give rooms a new look for the season is with layers and pairs. What I mean by that is don't be shy when it comes to adding layers of textures, patterns, and colors. The same applies to pairing old with new, vintage with bargain, and fresh with faux floral accents.  Here, I've layered a a new grain sack stripe runner with a *ruffled burlap piece that I've had for several years. Fresh sunflowers are paired with a faux moss pot to create a simple centerpiece and a vintage collectible bird is added as an accent. The combination of neutrals with a pop of color, bargain and vintage, and different textures adds a seasonal touch of rustic elegance and whimsy. {*You'll see how often I reuse the ruffled burlap piece throughout this post.}

Welcome Friends with Fall Greetings: Signs and Wreaths

As a writer, I love words and it's evident when you come to my home. From the front door to any room in the house, you'll find greetings and messages featured in signs and wreaths. Here, I've accented a bargain sign from Ross with a simple sunflower garland. Hanging it near my vintage jadeite collection adds instant vintage charm. {See how to make my 15 Minute Floral Garland, here!

Create Festive Outdoor Spaces

One of my favorite ways to enjoy the beautiful fall weather is by creating festive outdoor spaces. Setting a pretty table doesn't need to include a full meal. Here, I've layered a thrifted vintage quilt with vintage dishes from my collection to serve Cupcakes and Coffee in the Garden.  {Get my recipe for Pumpkin Spice Cupcakes with Cinnamon Buttercream Frosting, here!

Bring Nature Indoors

Nothing lifts my spirits quite like accenting with natural elements such as fresh or dried flowers, herbs, and seasonal produce. Here, a vintage transferware sugar bowl filled with fresh thyme resting on a vintage lace doily is another example of the layers and pairs I mentioned earlier. {See the rest of my seasonal Vintage Transferware Mantel, here! }

Nature is also one of my favorite ways to find inspiration whether it's a walk in my neighborhood or stroll through the garden, which inspired my DIY Herbal Bouquet Garni. {Featured in Country Sampler's Autumn Decorating.}

  2. I love your fall decor; it is always inspirational. Enjoyed the squirrel especially. Here in Maine, it was too good a yearfor gray squirrels and an EPIDEMIC of them have been run over; so sad! Cut a vase full of too-long forsythia branches to see if they will root out this time of year and it adds a touch of greenery here!

  3. All beautiful fall touches. Isn't it great when we can use vintage and thrifty finds to decorate our homes? Unfortunately, our outdoor weather is pretty limited now....a few more weekend bonfires and it'll be inside the house we go! Enjoy your outdoor spaces! xo Kathleen
