Festive Stocking Wreath Alternative: Fridays at Home

Happy Friday, Friends! I love fresh wreaths during the holidays, but this year the warmer than usual weather necessitated an alternative. Check out my simple solution featuring a festive stocking...

In my small town, decent fresh wreaths are usually unavailable after Thanksgiving weekend, which means they are cut at least a month before and are pretty dried out by Christmas. Our weather has been unseasonably warm even for Texas and I just couldn't imagine hanging fresh wreaths in 80 degrees! Years ago, I bought this burlap bell-trimmed stocking at a craft show. I added the vintage lace and often use it in my Christmas decor. This year, I decided to use it as an alternative wreath. Ready to make your own?

First: If you have a metal door, glue a few magnets to the stocking back in addition to the loop hanger. (This keeps the stocking hanging securely when the door opens and closes.) Next: Add fresh greenery to floral tubes. Then: If the stocking lays a little flat, you can stuff the bottom with plastic grocery bags or tissue. Last: Add a small sign to embellish your "wreath"--mine is actually a tag board gift tag.

Although the gift tag had adhesive, I decided to tack it with a button stitch so it will stay on when I hang the stocking on the outside of the door.

Remember the thrifted green stocking I shared last week? It's hanging on the fence near my back door. This gives you an idea of some of the different looks you can create depending on your stocking.

  1. That antique lace looks so pretty with the burlap. Love it. I need to locate my little water vials, and try this out with greenery. Happy weekend, Cecilia!

  2. This is a charming vintage look for a wreath, Cecilia. And your pointer abut the magnet is helpful. I will be featuring you at the next FWF link party!
