Friday's Find #141

TGITF Friends! Okay, raise your hand if you figured out my hint from Wednesday. I'm guessing most of you know me well enough that if I say I found something green, vintage and loved all over, I can only be referring to one thing--jadeite! This week's feature is all about jadeite but have you ever noticed the wide range of prices associated with the pretty green glassware? I've seen this more and more lately and thought it might be helpful to share the actual value of the collectibles.

Friday's Find #141 mythriftstoreaddiction.blogspot.com Vintage jadeite scored half price at an estate sale!

I scored the set above on the second day of an estate sale half price!  The main draw for me was the covered sugar bowl. I honestly didn't know they came with lids as I've only ever seen them without! True confession: while I will occasionally splurge on a rare jadeite find, I am basically cheap! This is why there is no way I would have paid the first day asking price of $45 and also why you will never see me pay $75 for a coffee mug. However, I knew the sugar bowl alone would sell for more than the second day half price, which is why I returned.  This is one of the more common patterns Jane Ray which ran from the mid-forties through the sixties. I happen to prefer the design to the more collected Restaurant ware, but my favorite Jadeite patterns are Fire-King Alice and Charm and McKee Laurel.  According to a collector's guide in Country Living, a dinner plate like this is valued at $10....

....and the saucers at $5 each, though I usually see both priced higher.

So far, I have been unable to find the actual value of the sugar bowl. I only found a few for sale online with lids, ranging from $40-$50.

Some other points of interest: The ball jug is valued at $400 and even cracked ones can go for $150. The Jeanette ginger jar is valued at $145 and the Alice dinner plates are valued at $45. I have a few of them--I scored this one for $1!  These values are according to The Collector's Guide to Jadeite...

... which also lists D handled coffee mugs valued at $30 each.  These seem to be a favorite among collectors which may account for excessive prices. I've seen them ranging from $25-$85.  If you watch Etsy and Ebay, you can occasionally find them for less, like I did a few years ago.

I hope I've given you some guidelines for the next time you see a tempting jadeite find! On Sunday, I'll be sharing the second part of my stay at the Bide-A-While Retreat. You may think I saved the best for last, when you see the next unexpected feature I'll be sharing!
Until next time, happy hunting!

  1. Hi Cecilia, great price on your collective take of jadeite! I have the Jane Ray lidded sugar and creamer from years ago (a great price too, and prices were already soaring then). Charm and Restaurant ware are my favorite lines, but availability has me holding more restaurant ware than any other. I love its thickness and durability. Can you imagine paying $75 for the c-cup?!

  4. I had my AMAZING jadeite score last weekend! I paid up on a few pieces, but know that collectors would pay at least double what I paid (in most cases). Some of the pieces I'll find it hard to part with!

  5. This is a great guide as I know nothing about jadeite. I only have one plate and a little dessert cup that I am not even sure is jadeite. I will have to use your link to check it out. I love your tablecloths too!

  8. Cecilia that is such a beautiful shade of green. I can't believe they go for that much money, I guess I'm getting a lesson here. It's always fun to learn about old things I might even have some pieces and not know thier value. Thaks for joining us at Sweet Inspiration.

  10. Your collection of jadeite is so pretty. Glad you found the lidded sugar bowl. Thanks for all the information of the value. I have a few pieces, but not really a collection. I am surprised at the value of some of the pieces. Several years ago, I sold some of the D-handle mugs/cups on eBay as was shocked at what they sold for. Happy hunting.
    Hugs,
    Audrey Z.

  14. When we got married in 1957 We were given a dinner set of jadite. I never knew it was collectable, of course it was common back then. I think I only have two cups and saucers up in the top of my cupboard that are left. From your pictures I would say they are the Alice pattern--same as your plate.. I didn't even know there were different patterns! I had to go look and see what I had. At our wedding we also got a set of dishes but they were sort of a gold color, solid like the jadite and with a pattern. Do you know what these would have been?

  15. Great post Cecilia. Like you I am too cheap (frugal) to pay the outrageous prices. A friend gave me the sugar bowl because it was her only piece of jadite. No lid, but I love it! I have a mug and paid $10 for both it and the saucer at a thrift. They were marked $10 each and the employee thought it was high and just said he would give them both to me for $10. Oh happy day! One thing I am curios about is the different shades. Do you know much about that? I have it all housed in my glass cabinets and there are two distinct shades. Thanks for sharing with SYC.
    hugs,
    Jann

  16. How beautiful! And what an informative post. I didn't know there were different patterns of jadeite either. (That "Alice" pattern is gorgeous!)

I now know (thanks to your post) that the two plates I have are the Jane Ray pattern. We used them at our family's summer cottage when I was growing up. I need to look again at the items we took out of there -- I do believe there may have been a mug or two. And that lidded sugar bowl looks awfully familiar too. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and beautiful jadeite items.
