The Thrifty Way to Organize Your Home: Editing Basics

Happy first Monday of 2021, Friends! Do you find it challenging to keep your drawers, cabinets, and closets free from clutter? If you are a procrastinator, struggle to declutter your home, or just want an organizational tweak, this series is for you...

Thrifty Home Edit Tips

First, let me say if this isn't your strength, don't be intimidated! I started my process in November, and while I did not work 16 days in a row, I have already tried and implemented the tips I am sharing with you.

I am providing two charts; the one above includes the projects I have actually completed, and below is a blank chart for you to personalize according to your needs. (Just right click on the images and select Save image as.)  Let's get started!

How to declutter your home

Divide and Conquer: Purge, Clean, and Organize One Project at a Time!

Maybe you're like me, and organizing the whole house seems like a daunting project. Sometimes, just knowing where to start can be overwhelming. The solution that works for me is to divide, conquer, and tackle mini goals. Start with one project and take breaks if you get overwhelmed or feel "stuck." I started by taking a few photos of areas that needed purging, like this one of my previously messy linen cabinet. Once I removed the things I planned to donate, I could see more clearly what I might need for storage.

Take Inventory of Needed Supplies: Shop Your Home and Dollar Store for Thrifty Storage!

As I mentioned before, buying storage containers from the Container Store and comparable sources can get pricey quickly. Baskets provide pretty storage and are almost always a thrift store staple. In addition to the wire baskets and fabric bins available at Dollar Tree, I also found some great canisters for the pantry and handy labels--a must have we'll discuss later in the series!

Need Additional Motivation? Watch Episodes of Lifestyle Shows that Inspire You

I must confess this project was inspired by my obsession with the Netflix Series Get Organized with the Home Edit. If you've never watched it, give it a try! However, I will add a few caveats: Some of the celebrity homes are over-the-top, so use the tips that work for you, but don't get sucked into comparing your home! Also, the organizational products they use are not particularly budget-friendly, but I've got your back, and I'll be sharing thrifty alternatives throughout this series!

  1. All great tips and getting the home organized can be daunting.

When we moved to this house we purged and purged.

We have luckily kept everything organized. My craft room/office is our project left.

    Happy New Year!

  2. I don't think I'll ever be organized, but I did treat myself to 6 more clear shoeboxes to store craft supplies in. And a Christmas red tote to put "Christmas 2021" into as I shop!
