Vintage Inspired Summer Potting Stand

Hi there, Friends! I lost the shady spots in my garden when four trees were uprooted in a recent storm. Eventually I'll plant more trees, but I took a break from garden clean up to create a pretty potting space in a shadier area near my backdoor...

If you read the six week update I shared last Monday, you saw that I am slowly making progress in my back garden. I have accepted that restoring the garden will be a process, but I found myself needing a bit of pretty. You may remember the potting stand I shared last fall. That was when I brought it outdoors for the first time after originally repurposing it for indoor use. This week, I moved it near my backdoor to create a cheerful focal point. Here it is, after I have gathered several items I wanted to use: a pre-pandemic church rummage sale sign,  white-washed terracotta, an urn, a vintage chicken feeder tray and zinc pots.

Sadly, the container plants I planted from seed this spring, including two varieties of basil, were shredded by the high winds. I made an early morning trip to a local nursery and found a new-to-me variety of basil called "Magic Mountain." Aren't the pale purple spiked blooms lovely?

With the scorching Texas temps in mind, I also selected drought-tolerant potato vine, and colorful vinca.

The utility shelves that I repurposed for displaying planters previously in this space are in need of a refresh. I'll share how I plan to use them soon, but it felt good to clean up and declutter as I worked. I found this whimsical sign at Target's Dollar Spot several years ago. I used a magnet to add the miniature garden spade. Join me on Thursday, for the next Creative Crafts blog hop!

  1. That's some classy plant stand...I can see why you had it inside. It will be fun to see how this 'morphs' in the future..very handy though! Sandi

  2. I love that plant stand. Mine is currently the old gas grill with guts torn out. I can make a mess repotting plants, then close the lid! I know what you mean about taking a break from cleanup; I sat down to read emails after a bunch of chores rhia morning (including ironing including stuff for my booth) as it is in the 90s here in Maine--no a/c! Time for a cold drink, then more chores!

  3. I'm glad to hear that you are planting again. I absolutely love your potting stand. I have wanted one forever but alas I still have to make a mess on the patio table every time I plant something:) Love that urn, too! xo Kathleen
