Fragrant and Effective Hand Sanitizer: Fridays at Home

Happy Friday, Friends! Has your state started phases toward reopening? Texas has, but I am cautiously still staying close to home. I schedule most of my grocery shopping for pick-up and clad in my face mask, I make a monthly early morning run for other necessities. If you would have told me several months ago that I would consider hand sanitizer a fabulous find, I am not sure I would have believed you--but here we are! Today, I'll show you how to make the 99.99% effective germ-killing stuff wonderfully fragrant...

I assure you that I am not exaggerating when I tell you that from travel size to refill bottles, hand sanitizer has been nonexistent in my rural town since the beginning of March, so I was thrilled to find a large bottle at Walmart this week, even though there was a one bottle per customer limit.

Truth be told, when the pandemic first started, I thought I'd hop on Amazon, order some alcohol and aloe vera gel, and make my own DIY recipe--wrong! From Amazon to every place locally, even these ingredients have been harder to come by than toilet paper. Fortunately, my favorite essential oils have remained in stock and shipped quickly, so I made several fragrant to-go bottles of sanitizer by adding different scents.

Since the 60 oz Walmart refill is just under $6, it is a thrifty way to create bottles for your home, car, and purse. I had several bottles on hand from a previous project, but try looking near the travel size cosmetics--I've also included some links below.  To make your own, fill your container with sanitizer, leaving enough space to add a few drops of essential oil. Caution: Some oils are stronger than others so add sparingly especially if you have sensitive skin. I labeled my bottles with initials for the scents: R for rosemary and L for lavender. You may prefer to use different colored bottles for each scent or create your own labels.

  1. I'm with you, I can't believe these two products are impossible to find. I was going to make my own too.

Luckily I had travel size in the house in places to grab. Hoping things settle down soon.

  2. Yep, same here in Maine. Glad I had a couple of small bottles and that we aren't going many places so we don't need much! Adding the essential oil is a good idea!

  3. Lucky you! And such a great idea, Cecilia! I read a WSJ article that said hand sanitizer and wipes probably won't be back on shelves before summer. Unlike toilet paper, which almost 100% households keep stocked, hand sanitizer and wipes were stated to have previously only been stocked by about 40% households, so the demand is now way beyond production. That's why so many distilleries and pharmacies have turned to making their own concoctions. I've been shopping clicklists for the most part, but the few times I ventured into Sam's (scan and go), they didn't have it or wipes, and I didn't even think to check WM clicklist. Most things like that have to be purchased in store, and I just haven't ventured out much yet. But I will keep my eye out now, thanks!
