Repurposed Vintage Milk Can Scarecrow

Hi there, Friends! Even though it's still quite warm here, I've been having fun adding touches of fall to my home. How about you? If you were to visit me, you would be greeted by my latest whimsical resident. I've created a festive seasonal look for the vintage milk can that sits near my front door year round.

I found this vintage milk can at a yard sale, long before my blogging days and it has been sitting on my front entry steps ever since. No makeover was required, as the color and patina are just as I purchased it--well, except for the creeping fig that has since adorned it! I know some gardeners might consider the untamed greenery invasive, but I love the look of it climbing my traditional red brick home. I planted it with this in mind and though it took several years, it finally grows like crazy--with a mind of its own.  Like I've said before, in Texas if something is drought tolerant and stays green through our harsh summers, it can invade all it wants!

As I admired the way the greenery had climbed the can, the idea came to me. With my fondness for repurposing and playing dress up, I imagined a whimsical scarecrow. I already had an idea where to begin. Remember these recent finds?  Though I originally had a different project in mind for them, I could spare one. I decided to give it a faux terracotta finish. Since I wanted to showcase the vintage milk can dressed in nature's finest, I purposely kept it very simple.  I used  a cute yellow chevron patterned burlap ribbon from my craft stash...

...wrapped it around the "neck" and tied a simple knot to create a bow tie.

Next, I added a silk sunflower that already had magnetic backing from a previous project,

tied some raffia on the handles and added a clip on crow. It was originally repurposed from a broken light set, that I have since used for several garden projectsThe pumpkin head was topped with a zinnia and more raffia was tucked inside. With the added weight of the plant, the pumpkin rests nicely on top of the can without using any sort of adhesive. That way, in the future, when I am ready to strip or redress the milk can, I can do so in minutes. Isn't he a cutie?

Last, I decided my little friend needed some footwear ;)

Remember these? This is makeover number two for these upcycled garden clogs--gotta love spray paint!

My little scarecrow creates quite a cheerful and thrifty front door welcome. The copper watering can was a clearance buy from Target. Everything else was purchased at a yard sale or thrift store.

Now all he needs is a name! I'm leaning toward Rusty, but I'm open to suggestions!

  13. Oh my goodness... this is so cute ... and creative!! Love it. And on a totally random note .. besides upcycling old furniture, I'm also a Zumba instructor, and always on the lookout for upbeat music. If you haven't heard it ... The Vamps (a boy band that looks like they were carved out of butter!) do a remake of "Oh, Cecelia". You can find it on YouTube ... check it out ... it'll put a smile on your face for sure! :D Cynthia
