Vintage Linen Table Runner

Greetings Friends! There is just something about Vintage linens that make me swoon...Whether they are trimmed in delicate lace, hand embroidered or feature intricate patterns, I can't seem to get enough! Today I am sharing a simple yet elegant table runner crafted with these pretties.

I have been planning to fashion a table runner out of my linen stash for some time.  I purposely mixed whites and creams as well as different sizes and shapes, wanting to create a unique shape rather than a narrow rectangle like a typical runner. Here's a view from the opposite end of the table...

I started by arranging different pieces on the table until I was happy with the design. Because I use linens so often, I really didn't want to stitch them together.  However, I also didn't want the lightest little hankie at the end to fly off the table if I rushed by! Hmmmm....what to do?

Upon closer inspection, I noticed that several linens had lace openings that would serve as button holes.  So I gathered some tiny buttons...

Look closely above and you can see where I sewed the itsy bitsy button.

Here, you can see it "buttoned" onto the lace.

At this end, the circular lace work just needed a tiny snip inside to accommodate an equally tiny button. Pretty nifty, huh? Now if--or perhaps I should say when--I want to use them for another purpose, I can just unbutton  ;)

Here's a closer peek at the finished runner; simply adorned with pewter candlesticks and my shoe shine box centerpiece.  Last week's roses faded and have since been replaced with Pink Lady amaryllis I grew from bulbs.   Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

  8. Very cute, Cecelia and also timely. After putting some colored handkerchiefs in embroidery hoops what to do with my large stash of vintage white hankies was the next question. Thanks for answering it. I made a runner out of thrifted doilies as a gift for a friend a couple of years ago and it turned out well, despite me not being smart enough to think of the button trick.
