Darling Gingerbread House Crafted with Dollar Store Decor

Happy Tuesday, Friends! Believe it or not, this is the last Creative Craft Blog Hop of the year, hosted this month by Sara from Birdz of a Feather! Today I'm sharing how to give dollar store decor a darling do over for the holidays

If you hopped over after visiting Rachel from Tea and Forget-Me-Nots, welcome! Isn't her rag Garland charming? My project was inspired by the Christmas tablescape featuring all things gingerbread that I'll be sharing next month. (You can check out the adorable dishes I scored at a yard sale, here!) Since I have already collected a Christmas village, I didn't need multiple houses. As thrifting providence would have it, I found a single house at Dollar Tree waiting for me that was just the right size. Y'all know I am a big believer in the power of paint and I also added spackled "snow" to this craft. Here's a quick before and after. What do you think?

To create similar results, you'll need paint in a gingerbread shade--I used Apple Barrel Toffee--plus lightweight spackling, white paint, and paint in the accent colors you prefer.

Start by painting your house the gingerbread shade. Since my house is plastic, it required 3 coats of brown paint. (I also painted the awning that was red, AB Spring Green.) Next, combine 2 parts white paint and 1 part spackling to create "snow" and use a hard bristle paint brush or a popsickle stick to add snow to your house. Last, when the snow is thoroughly  dry, use white paint to add dots, hearts, and other frosting-like details. Optional: Finish with tiny accents like the holiday stickers from my  craft stash that I used for the door and window. Stay tuned to see the rest of my Christmas tablescape in a few weeks!

  7. Your houses are adorable. On my last two trips to Dollar Tree I have looked at these little houses and thought about making something with them but each time remind myself that I have more than enough projects to get done. Maybe they should be a goal for next year. Thanks for the inspiration.
