3 Step Front Door Refresh!

Greetings Friends! This past week I had a little ah hah moment, right in my living room. Maybe you can relate--you know, those places in our home we walk by daily and gradually fail to notice.  Sometimes all that's needed is a different perspective...

How to paint a door

My friend Carly and I meet weekly to discuss our book study, dish and pray.  We usually sit across the room from each other but the last time we met, I sat next to her as we looked at some photos.  The change in seating gave me a completely different perspective and when my eyes landed on the front door, I was caught off guard.  I actually blurted out, "Ugh, that looks icky!" Icky is not a word I typically use and obviously I see my front door multiple times every single day but evidently I'd grown too used to it.  Despite my eye for detail for the rest of the room, I'd overlooked the front door still had its original paint and that it was not complementary to the updated gray walls. It was now glaringly obvious--see what I mean?  So guess what I did the following Saturday? I was able to refresh my front door in one afternoon by following these easy steps:

1. Sand lightly.

2. Tape and then paint around hardware, windows and trim.

3.  Paint the rest of the door and repeat, if needed. This was before my second and final coat.

Voila! I only wish I'd done it sooner! I used Behr Premium Plus in Tahitian Sky.  It reminds me of those pretty little Tiffany jewelry boxes :)  Have you had a change in perspective lately?

  1. Sure made a difference, didn't it. Love the color. Our back door going into the garage needs painted, but there again, one of those doors, like you said ... gets overlooked. It is on my to-do list ... maybe next year.

  2. I'm curious, did you ever think to paint your door the same color as your walls?

  3. So creative and outside the normal boring door! I love you choose a different color from the walls it stands out instead of just blending with the walls. I can't wait to try this on our doors! Love the color!

  6. I am just planning to repaint my front door in and out! The white is dinged and scratched and looks bad.

  7. Wow, that was an easy fix! Looks great! I do have those aha moments and sometimes they are easy fixes and other times not so much! I have two huge projects I must tackle this winter that I am so tired of looking at in their current state!!

  8. Oh nice! Love the color! It did need it - the old color was definitely yellow next to the grey. But now I may have to paint my front and back doors. NOOOO! (Not my most favorite thing to paint. Ha.) I just won't look too close. For now. :-)

  14. That is really cool looking. I have never really made the attempt to give a door a more rustic look. It looks so welcoming and I love the lightness of it. Next time I have to do a repaint I might very well do something similar to this. I really gives the place a totally new and very improved look.

  15. I can totally relate to your experience! I spent part of a weekend repainting a wall in our living, but I decided to do the window trim another time. Months later, I looked over at the wall and realized that I never finished the trim! Somehow, I had completely forgotten that I needed to do it. Your blog has motivated me to finish my project. Thank you!
