Vintage Inspired Valentine Boxes

Greetings Friends! The last time I was in Target, I came across these ready made Valentine mailboxes and was instantly taken back to thoughts of my school days and construction paper hearts.  Have you ever had a similar experience?  Inspired by my nostalgia, I grabbed a few and decided to give them a little Vintage love...

Vintage Valentine Boxes

Did you make these in school?   I always looked forward to decorating mine and the great thing about these is that the mail slot is already cut--I never could seem to get mine quite right!

Vintage Valentine Boxes

Armed with glittery Christmas clearance wrapping paper, sheet music and modge podge I got started. I turned the box on each side as a pattern to cut the paper and used a sponge brush to modge podge it to the box.

Paper doilies always remind me of Valentine's Day.  I picked up these doily placemats from the weekly .25 sale I attend.

Turns out they were perfect for covering the box lids. I laid the placemat on top and cut around the slit.  Next, I modge podged the top and pressed down the scalloped edges along the lid's sides. I chose to leave the extra paper at the corners because I thought it looked more like real lace.

The paper doesn't take long to dry and then your box is ready to embellish...

The sheet music one is my favorite :)

Wouldn't these be fun to make with the little ones in your life?  Have a lovely week!

  1. I love how you prettied up these plain boxes. I remember doing this when I was in school, but they never looked this good. I think we used tissue paper boxes and painted them.

  5. Really pretty Cecilia ... my favorite is the one covered with music and the music heart cutouts. The rose gift tag looks sweet on there too. You are so creative.

  6. Next, you have to make Valentine cards to fill it! I made my box using a shoe box. We must have decorated them with construction paper, ribbons and paint, but I don't remember that part. I faintly remember the red silhouette cherubs holding hearts cut-outs. That was a very long time ago!

  14. Hi Cecilia,
I think these would be fun to make for the "big ones" in my life too! Valentine boxes bring back such happy memories of the anticipation and then the excitement of opening them. I love how you used simple thrifty material to decorate the boxes . . . good job! Thanks for the tutorial!

  15. These boxes are really lovely. I don't remember making them in school. It seems that we just had one big box which the teacher made and we put all our cards in there. I do remember the fun we had, though. Valentine Day at school was always special..Happy Tuesday..Judy
