"You Are My Sunshine" Repurposed Pillow: Fridays at Home

Happy Friday, Friends! When I was talking to Youngest Daughter this week, I realized it has been four months since I've visited a thrift store--an unprecedented record in my adult life during these unprecedented times! Today's Fridays at Home project is a repurposed pre-pandemic clearance find...

...I scored this sweet tea towel during my last trip to Colorado. The only thing I miss more than thrift stores during the pandemic is visiting my daughters and Ginger Grand. 😞 I am so thankful for video calls--but I still miss them all so much!

HERE'S WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
*Tea towel
*Appropriately sized pillow form (or Poly-fil stuffing)
*Minimal sewing skills (If you can sew a seam, you can make this pillow!)

Start by folding, pressing, and then pinning the towel right sides together. You've probably noticed that tea and flour sack towels come in a variety of sizes. This one is much smaller than the lavender flour sack towel I used in the spring. I'm using the photo from the previous pillow, since I used the same technique. I didn't measure this tea towel before stitching, but it is just the right size to cover the little blue travel pillows they sell at Walmart.  Next, Stitch the length of the pillow and one end. (The folded edge doesn't need to be stitched, and you'll need one end open for stuffing.) Then, turn the pillow right side out and press. Last, add the pillow form--it's likely to be a tight fit and may require some wrestling--😉 then hand sew the open end closed.

  1. Hi Cecilia, Yes, Thrift Stores are open in AZ and in some cities masks are required but not all cities adopted that requirement. I will only go to the cities where it is a requirement. At first the shopping was great and I found a lot of very good antiques. The Goodwill Stores used to have 50% off everything every other Saturday but they stopped that because of the crowds. Now I have to watch for the color of the week for the 50% off sale. Also, probably due to loss of sales, they have hiked their prices so high that it is not feasible to purchase something and make a profit in my booth. And lately, the merchandise selection is not that great. I'll have to rely on my inventory for a while to keep the booth going. This is a very disappointing trend.

  2. I love making pillows from towels and placemats! I score seasonal towels at Joanne's when they are 70% off, often get new placemats @ GW (miss ACMoore's $1 ones!). I love using hemmed material (like sheets) for overlapping the backs so the sewing is minimal! I just ordered some books from GW this morning; thrifting from my computer chair. I NEED to read! Our GWs in Maine have a different color tag 50% off every week. Sundays, last's week's color is $1.; On Monday, it's fill a bag of last week's tag for $10. There is a REASON why my kids call me the QUEEN OF CRAM!

  5. I love that song! I have been making pillow covers out of towels and placemats for years -- mainly because it's so easy but also because I'm a horrible seamstress! xo Kathleen
