The 15 Minute Fix: Vintage China Chalkboard

Hey Friends!  It's time for another 15 minute fix! When I posted my Tart Tin & Herb Flower Garden Mantel recently, I promised to share how I created a chalkboard from a vintage platter without painting the china.  Some of you may already know this tip, but it is such a quick, thrifty and easy fix--I just had to share it...

I've used this charming English Royal Vitreous platter in a variety of ways, since I found it at a thrift store some time ago. More than once, I'd considered painting the center with chalkboard paint, but decided against it.  However, after the ease of using adhesive chalkboard paper for another recent project, the dilemma was solved.  {See links at the bottom for supplies.}

I started by tracing the platter's center to create a pattern.

Next, I used the paper pattern to cut the chalkboard paper, peeled it off and stuck it to the center of the platter. Easy-peasy!

All that's left is to add your message.  Mine is currently displayed on an easel on my mantel, but it could be hung with a plate hanger as well.

  1. Cecilia, I've never used the adhesive chalkboard paper. I have visions of trying to scrape contact paper off of shelves, I guess. So I'm curious...does it peel off easy?
    I do think it's a good solution to not painting. You get the chalkboard but get to keep the integrity of your platter! Love your 15 minute quick fixes.

  2. I have not tried the chalkboard paper. Now that I see your cute platter with it I am keeping it in mind for anything that would be a nice application without being committed to it forever. Thanks Cecilia :)

  3. I have used some on the entire length of a door(!) (posting about it soon) to create a weekly family calendar. I think it would be better for writing something that doesn't need to be erased and changed every week because it doesn't seem to be as forgiving as a regular chalkboard. But I do love the idea and I think it's perfect for some projects where you don't want to have to paint! xo Kathleen

  4. Very cute and unique! I have not used the paper, but I have used chalk paint for lots of projects. I found that even ordinary black paint will work okay for a chalkboard that it is not used that much. xoxo Su

  6. Yes! That stuff is great! I used it two large frames to make a menu chalkboard for my kitchen and a notice board for a display window. Never thought to put it on a plate. Looks great!

  10. I like this idea, and I've used chalkboard fabric, also. I covered a child's cardboard table with it and have sewn with it, too.
