Upcycled Spring Door Basket

Happy Thursday, Friends! It's time for this month's Creative Crafts blog hop hosted by Andrea at Design Morsels!  Today I'm sharing the simple upcycle of a recent thrifted basket...

If you hopped over after visiting Rachelle from My Hubbard Home, welcome! Aren't her handcrafted Mother's Day cards lovely? Last week I shared several baskets I scored from the thrift store. I knew I wanted to use this one as a wreath alternative, and I already had some spring greenery on hand. Ready to make your own?

If you look closely, you'll notice a few bare spots, so first I started by using a cosmetic sponge to touch up the paint. Depending on the basket you select, you may be able to skip this step! Next: Add an assortment of greenery, succulents, or flowers, arranging the larger stems first, and filling in with smaller pieces.

I used a combination of lamb's ear and succulents, but maybe you prefer to create a Mother's Day or May Day basket filled with flowers. The great thing about this type of pocket basket is that the stems stay in place well once they are tucked in, but it's also easy to play around with the design until you're happy with the results. Also, you can create a similar wreath alternative even if you can't find this style basket--many varieties will work!

My upcycled spring basket also looks great hanging on the wall--here's a peek of it on the gallery wall above the mantel in my dining room.

  4. Cecilia, I was just at a thrift store yesterday, and saw a basket like this - but didn't purchase it. Your cute wall décor with the succulents is a great upcycled project. I have a large white/off white frame and if I hurry, the basket may still be there!!! Thank you for the inspiration sweet girl.

  12. I have that same basket. Mine came from a thrift store. It was red and I painted it white, put flowers in it to hang on my door as a wreath.

  13. This makes a lovely year-round statement. And using faux plants in the basket eliminates watering problems and lets you hang it just about anywhere!

  14. I really liked the combo of the fuzzy lamb's ears and the "rubbery-ness" of the succulents. I could almost feel the textures! My latest basket (yesterday) was a 1/2 price one at the place where I have a booth--$1. Will be another Be Good to Yourself silent auction item. I can never have enough baskets but only my faves get to "stay." Or rotate through!
