DIY Painted Gallery Fence

Happy Monday, Friends!  Today's DIY project--refreshing a stained fence that had faded an undesirable color--has been on my mind for some time. After completing some recent updates due to storm damage, I was ready to tackle the project. However, because of the fence's length and the Texas heat, I decided to break the task down into more manageable mini projects. Check out the new color, what it looked like before, and the whimsical collage I added to create an outdoor gallery wall...

As promised, in the next few weeks I'll be sharing a 3 month update of my progress since the devastating storm that wreaked havoc on my garden. As the back garden still involves a lot of strenuous clean up, lately I have been focusing on the necessary home repairs that were also a result of the storm. After 21 years with the same color roof, I decided to change the color from green to gray. (Stay tuned for a peek of my new roof, coming soon!)

Long before the roof decision, I had been contemplating painting my fence gray; most of it was previously stained a cedar color. Unfortunately, portions have not weathered well, and most have  faded an orangish shade I have grown to hate. As I anticipated, I like how the gray compliments my dark red brick and green trim work. Once the gray roof was completed, it sealed the deal, and I found this premixed patio and porch paint by Behr. I've had good results using porch paint for other projects than porches, and since it is durable enough to walk on, I am hoping it will weather better! Although the paint in the can and the dried result definitely look gray, for some reason, it has a bluish tint while it is wet, causing me a bit of panic initially!

However, you'll notice that it does dry gray--whew! Here, you can see the before and after.

I love how the adirondack chair and colorful vincas pop against the freshly painted fence! Sitting here provides a view of the fountain and vintage potting stand from one direction and my outdoor "gallery wall" from the other.

You may remember that I have a fondness for styling decor on the fence--I can see it from my backdoor. I rescued and repainted the garden sign from the back garden.

I rearranged some of my existing decor. The Come at evening... sign was a giveaway win from Jemma from At Home with Jemma...

...and the pointing finger and vintage chicken feeder were Canton finds during a visit with Cecilia from the B Farm several years ago!

The colorful watering can and talavera sun were also gathered from the back garden.

  1. The fence looks great! I absolutely love that sun piece :) My boyfriend and I have a gallery wall in our bedroom and one of my favorite pieces of art is a clay sun my boyfriend made when he was in 8th grade. It has so much character!
