Crochet a Cozy Velvety Throw

Happy Monday, Friends! Today I'm sharing two super soft and cozy throws I crocheted with the same type of velvety yarn--one for me and the other as a Christmas gift. While this project does take some time to complete, it's an easy  pattern to follow that only requires 2 different stitches

Crochet a Cozy Velvety Throw

You may remember the first chunky throw I crocheted for Dear Firstborn and posted last fall. The yarn for the two throws I am featuring today is more velvety than chunky and also a slightly lighter weight. The shade I selected for mine is called Spa. (You can find the yarn at Hobby Lobby and it's 30% off every other week!)

One of the best things about this throw is that you can personalize in just the right size and color you prefer. After chain-stitching the foundation and first row, every following row repeats. Your throw will be finished when it reaches the desired size. I'm partial to the "lap-ghan" size, but if you'd like to make a larger throw, you'll just need to start with a larger foundation row--everything else will remain the same. I used a 5.5 hook for both throws.

Foundation row: Chain stitch 70

Row 1: Starting at the second chain from the hook, half double crochet (HDC) in every stitch. Chain 1 and turn.

Row 2: In the first available space, work HDC until the end of the row. Chain 1 and turn.

Row 3 to finish: Repeat row 2.

Here's the gift throw I made using the same yarn brand in Blush. I finished both with chunky tassels at each corner--scroll down to see how I make them by wrapping and tying off yarn.

Chunky Tassels:

Start by wrapping yarn 40-50x around a small book. Tie off in the center as pictured in the first image. Gently remove yarn from the book, and cut at the bottom center. Then wrap and double-knot a piece of yarn to form the tassel top. Trim tassel ends as needed and sew one to each corner of the throw.

Here's a closer look at the one previously pictured on my vintage sofa. Its finished size is 37" x 48"--perfect for my Short Girl lap 😉 I made my gift throws slightly larger. Remember, the size is up to you!  TIP:  I used 9 skeins for the Spa throw and 12 for the Blush.

I'm currently working on my next gift in this beautiful jewel-toned Teal Green.
