A Simple Thrifty Guest Room Refresh

Greetings Friends! I'm curious, what's your method for completing decorating projects in your home--within several days or over a longer period, like weeks or even months?  Most of the time when I tackle a project, I'll confess it's with a specific time frame in mind. It may take longer than I anticipated, and I may have more than one project going on at the same time, but overall I am a very start-to-finish type of girl. Depending on the task, it could be hours or a few days, but I usually finish within the week. However, this year I adapted a more relaxed approach when I decided to refresh a guest bedroom...

It wasn't really an intentional decision and I'm sure I was partly influenced by the overwhelming task of putting the room back together when my house flooded last summer. Back in August, I opted to stain the concrete, rather than replacing the ruined carpet. Once the floor was refreshed, of course one thing led to another, but this time on a smaller scale. Fortunately, the wall paint wasn't damaged and since I still liked the colors, repainting wasn't necessary but I was ready to update the bedding. While I always love floral patterns, it was just time for a change. Here's the bedding before:

The color of the accent wall behind the bed is the exact shade as Heavenly Blue morning glories and Youngest Daughter chose it when she was still at home. I wanted to keep the same color palette, but just lighten things up a bit.  I pictured bedding with a dreamy feel and after hunting everywhere, I finally found just what I envisioned from Better Homes & Gardens at Walmart. Even better--it was on sale! Incidentally, I found it back in the fall, just before Cecilia B.'s visit.

Next I brightened the curtains--I found this pair with a yellow quatrefoil pattern at Homegoods for under $20 and added some breezy sheers from Big Lots. What a difference! I don't think I've ever shared the pretty vintage bed frame in this room. It was one of the first big furniture pieces I brought home from thrifting, about eight years ago. No makeover was needed and the white and brass pairing is perfect.

The coordinating yellow pillow was also a Homegoods find and I found You are my sunshine at Tuesday Morning, just recently.  The bedding, pillows and curtains are new purchases that complement and refresh the room's existing decor; simple changes I added over a period of months.

You've seen the thrift store bed frame, now I'd like to show you the rest of the room's furnishings. I often share that 90% of my decor is thrifted, and as I surveyed the room I realized every single piece of furniture was discovered either at a yard sale, thrift store or estate sale, collected mostly before I began blogging--sorry, no before photos. I painted and recovered this estate sale chair in toile. Did you notice the long toile pillow on the bed? I found it at a yard sale after I did the chair.  The needlepoint pillow on the chair was thrifted too ;)

I upcycled this vintage estate sale vanity for Youngest Daughter's twelfth birthday and then inherited when she moved out on her own.

More thrifted treasures include a vintage luggage rack piled with a collection of quilts, scored at yard sales and thrift stores.

Some of you may remember this $5 wicker dresser, I found at a yard sale last year. All it needed was a fresh coat of white spray paint and new knobs but I added something special inside too. The blue and white china pieces and even the mosaic tray were, yep--yard sale finds!

Last but not least, a favorite created from two yard sale finds. The $3 frame was really a mess but I saw potential with paint, and it sure cleaned up nicely.  The lovely cross stitch was .25 buried in a basket full of fabric, but well worth the hunt! The message really resonates with me.
