Hi there, Friends! It's time for this month's Creative Craft blog hop hosted by Sara at Birdz of a Feather. Today I'm sharing DIY art I crafted from leaves I gathered while visiting my girls in Colorado last fall. It's a lovely way to preserve natural beauty and it's FREE...
If you hopped over after visiting Terrie from Decorate and More with Tip, welcome! Texas is not known for its fall foliage. It's almost time to decorate for the holidays by the time our trees begin to show a little color and given this year's month-long heat wave of temps over 100, I'm not sure we will see autumn at all this year. Fortunately, I brought home leaves pressed in a book after oohing and ahhing over Colorado's autumn splendor last year.
I wanted to highlight their beauty so I decided to create some unique art by displaying them on a handmade doily garland inside framed wood I had on hand. You can create a similar look with most any frame. {TIP: My framed piece started as "ugly" clearance art. By looking beyond and removing the part that didn't appeal to me, I found a unique framed piece for next to nothing and it can be styled and restyled!}
Start by adding a coat of satin varnish (or Mod Podge) to protect the leaves without adding shine.

Next, arrange the garland in the framed area and use TACKY to attach the doilies. {TIP: To make sure that the doilies "stick," be generous with this adhesive. You can find TACKY at Hobby Lobby, and I love it because it's inexpensive and easy to remove if when I want to change designs!}
Last, gently tuck the leaves inside the doilies which creates a sort of pocket effect that doesn't require additional adhesive.
You'll notice that I alternated doilies with and without leaves and that I preferred using leaves of the same color. Not bad for free art, huh?!
So pretty Cecilia! I still think Fall is inevitable even though our weather has been crazy hot too. I love the tip about adding tacky; that's a great idea I'll have to remember.
ReplyDeleteCecilia this art piece is adorable. Love how it turned out. I have been slowly bringing out Fall even though the weather is still screaming summer.
ReplyDeleteThis is so pretty and so different from the usual fall decor! The doilies really make the leaves stand out, such a cute idea!

What a fabulous idea to use doilies to enhance the appearance of the leaves! It's quite unique and I love how it turned out! It is truly a work of art!
ReplyDeleteI love this project! And as a fellow Texan I think you are right about Fall not putting in an appearance! How smart to bring home leaves from Colorado and what a great way to preserve a memory from a trip! Great job. Love this and thanks so much for sharing!
ReplyDeleteVery pretty, Cecelia. I love the look of the leaves on doilies. I have a standing frame that I need to work on and you've given me some inspiration!
ReplyDeleteThis is a very pretty and unique project. Love how you pulled it together.
ReplyDeleteThis is so pretty and delicate!
ReplyDeleteAll I have done about fall decorating my home is THINK about it. But I did make a fall wreathe and garland today to bring to my booth. Scored fake leaves last year at Christmas Tree Shop 90% off! Bought hoards of them; gave a lot to my daughter who is in charge of a new preschool for handicapped kids. I had a neon green glitter grapevine wreathe (90% off when ACMoore closed 2 years ago): I pretty well covered it with variety of glitter leaves, realistic ones, and burlap-y ones. Very pleased with myself! Used more for the garland!
ReplyDeleteSo pretty! Absolutely amazing for free art! I live on the Gulf Coast and we never have winter and fall temps don't hit us until way into November. It's usually short sleeves and sometimes shorts after dinner for the kids at Thanksgiving. It'll be a while before I can gather any colored leaves, but I will keep this project in mind when I do! Pinned! Happy hopping & thanks for sharing on Crafty Creators!
ReplyDeleteCecelia,
