Vintage Farmhouse Christmas Sign Repurposed from a Player Piano Roll

Hi there, Friends! Many of you expressed curiosity regarding my plans for the vintage player piano roll I scored thrifting a few weeks ago. Well today I'll show you how I repurposed it as a vintage farmhouse Christmas sign and how you can create one too, using craft paper.  Oh, and if calligraphy or beautiful handwriting isn't one of your skills, no worries--it's not one of mine either! I'll show you a simple trick to fake it...

I wanted to make a rustic Christmas sign to hang on my gallery wall for the holidays and was planning to use craft paper myself until I came across this fabulous vintage player piano roll. Whether you happen to have a piano roll or are using craft paper, to get started you'll also need jute twine to hang it.

Cut the twine long enough to tie to each end of the roll, and still leave slack for hanging. Mine is 17" long and the roll is just under 11" wide. The piano roll has grooved ends that help keep the twine in place. If you use craft paper with open ends, the jute will need to be long enough to be threaded through the roll, so adjust the length accordingly.

At this point, take a minute to consider where you want to hang the sign and try it out. Also think about the message you want to add, and the placement of your lettering. This step will allow you to adjust the length of the paper or the length of the jute twine as needed, before adding the letters. Once you have the desired length, double knot the ends of the jute.

Would you be surprised that the lettering on my sign was created with stickers? I found these pretty script letters 50% off at Hobby Lobby, but I've also included a link at the end of the tutorial.

I actually applied them while my sign was hanging which helped me with spacing and I found using the stickers so much simpler than stenciling the letters. Plus, the finished results look like painted letters :)

Here's a peek of my vintage farmhouse Christmas sign hanging on the gallery wall, with a piece of the preserved greenery I used for my holiday chair decor. It makes the perfect focal point and the message not only ushers in the beginning of the holidays, but will also serve as a gentle reminder during the season! Coming soon, I'll be sharing more of my rustic and romantic Christmas dining room.

  4. I was SOOO sure that you would put a tassel of the end of that little eyelet thingy on the end, I was disappointed to see it in the frame! I think a jute tassel with craft paper would be nice if you didn't have the great frame. I am going to have to look for big letters like that caz I sure can't do calligraphy, have had lousy luck with stencils, and can't paint worn a darn; great solution! I love keeping Christ in Christmas; my tree always has some Nativity ornaments right at eye level. One year, my ex was visiting and he asked why I had 2 Nativity sets. I made some noncommital answer. Today, I would say, "Because I can and I want to." Actually the third is a year-round small white set inside an anniversary clock that lost the twirling balls!

  5. I love this Cecilia! Love the reminder, love it displayed in the frame. Can't believe those are stickers either. They look just like stenciling.
