Hi there, Friends! If you've read even a few of my posts, you know my affection for whimsical accents in both my home and garden. When I can repurpose existing junk I have on hand, I'm a happy camper! I bet some of you have some pieces you've held onto that could be recreated as funky garden mushrooms. Why not throw in a few cans of spray paint and create your own Fungi Town?

This idea has been in the works for some time and I've been gathering items that I could envision as mushrooms. For example, rather than discarding faded plastic flower pots and the glass light shades I updated with DIY vintage farmhouse fixtures, I kept them with this project in mind. I also shopped my garden and decided to use two tall candlesticks that I had previously used as ornamental pedestals. After playing around with what pieces fit together well, I spray painted those I planned to use. I chose the colors by using paint I had on hand.

To assemble my fungi, I stacked flower pots for the center mushroom and used the candlesticks for the others. The light globes I mentioned worked nicely for the red mushroom caps and another glass dish I had previously used as a small bird bath was painted white for the stacked flower pots. I was satisfied with how the cap pieces rested on the stems without adding any type of adhesive. While I like the flexibility of being able to move or change them, they could easily be glued, if you prefer. To create the polka dots, I used the end of a foam paint brush which is larger than a craft paint brush. You may have noticed that I painted more pieces than I used. Once I assembled and arranged them, I decided less was more.

As a teenager of the late seventies, the 1980 song Funky Town has always been a personal favorite. In part, my motivation for creating the whimsical mushroom patch was for Ginger Grand's amusement. Last year when we crafted our Gnome Sweet Home, he was so tickled by the play on words, he repeated them all week long, giggling each time. Since he's familiar with the song after it was made popular again by the movie Shrek 2, I knew the name and word play would delight him :)
