Repurposed Vintage Frame Chalkboard Tray

Happy Wednesday, Friends!  As promised from Sunday's post, today I'm sharing details for repurposing a vintage frame as a small chalkboard tray...

So here's how the $1 frame looked when I brought it home from the yard sale. Loved the vintage frame's ornate detail and timeworn patina, but the damaged faded print--not so much. I knew I wanted to create a chalkboard that could double as a small tray. I started by cleaning the wood with orange peppermint spray, which is the perfect way to get rid of any pests lingering in the old wood.

Then I used extra fine sandpaper to smooth chipped paint.

Next, I applied DecoArt Americana Decor creme wax, left over from a previous project.

Though meant to be used with chalk paint, I've found it to be effective as a protective coat for similar projects. It dries clear with a matte finish.

I found this large roll of textured wallpaper at a yard sale for .50. I knew the neutral color and thick quality would come in handy for some of my many projects. I still had peel and stick chalkboard paper from my last repurposed chalkboard project.

I traced the frame onto the wallpaper to create a finished backing and

attached it with craft adhesive squares.

Finally, after tracing the frame's front opening as a pattern, I added peel and stick chalkboard paper. I carefully smoothed it as I went, tucking it under the edge of the frame.

Voila!
