The 15 Minute Fix: Fun Summer Kids' Crafts

Happy Wednesday Friends! It's time for another 15 Minute Fix and today I'm sharing fun summer crafts for kids. Each was kid tested and given a thumbs up by Ginger Grand during his recent visit and each can be completed in 15 minutes!

First up, a firefly night light inspired by the real thing. Did you ever catch fireflies and put them in a jar when you were a kid? I did and the memory was triggered when tons of the tiny bugs started appearing near my bedroom window, earlier this summer. I read that there are actually more fireflies after a rainy spring which explains this year's abundance. When GG was here, I learned the little city boy hadn't seen fireflies before, so of course we had a viewing party accompanied by multiple exclamations of "Look, there's one!"  The next day we crafted the night light as a memento he could take home with him.

Here's how we made it: I had saved and sanitized a purple plastic vitamin jar, but any dark colored plastic container with a lid would work. Next, Ginger Grand decorated it with an assortment of bug stickers, including fireflies.

Then we were ready to add the battery operated LED lights. I found these at Ikea and I like them because they have an on/off switch, plus a screwdriver is needed to add or remove the batteries--to prevent little fingers from getting curious!  At bedtime, we would remove the jar lid and GG would turn the light on, then I would turn it off once he fell asleep. However, I forgot one night and they were still burning brightly the next morning!

He was quite proud of his creation!

On to our next project! Remember this little guy I featured a few months ago? I knew Ginger Grand would love him for his garden, but I also had a project in mind.

Glow in the dark garden spider

For a 5 year old boy, the only thing better than a creepy garden spider is a creepy glow-in-the-dark garden spider! After giving careful instructions and donning him with a protective mask, I let GG spray it himself, with a trigger spray attachment as the regular spray paint button is too hard for little fingers to push.

  3. Hi Cecilia ...
What fun for Ginger Grand and you too, of course !!!
So glad you introduced him to the fireflies (lightening bugs). I love fireflies and the memories they stir up. Yes, I have noticed a lot of them this year. Reminds me of one of my earlier blog posts. I will send you a link to it. So happy GG got to spend some time with you. Time he will always remember.
