Repurpose a Vintage Spoon Display as an Herb Drying Rack!

Hi there, Friends! One of my favorite things about thrifting is taking a dated find and repurposing it in an unexpected, useful way. Today's project not only allows me to indulge my passion for bringing the outdoors inside, it's also functional in the practical sense.

Since I harvest my organic herbs from spring through fall for my shop, Secret Garden Herbs, I am always looking for creative, space saving ways to dry them. While I often bring vintage pieces home without knowing exactly how I will use them, when I saw this old spoon display rack, inspiration struck right in the thrift store. Here's how it looked before. The wood was in great condition, but the color was an orangey oak finish and needed to be painted.

Once it dried, I distressed the edges with fine sandpaper. After wiping it down thoroughly, it was ready for hanging herbs. I made sure the herb sprigs were thick enough to fit snugly in the spoon slot. Rosemary works really well, due to its thicker stem, but other herbs could be bundled with jute or even a small rubber band...

...like I did with the blue sage in the top center.

As I admired my new project, I decided to add Scrabble tiles to spell HERBS. I used glue dots to attach them because they are easy to remove if I want to change words, at some point. It's hanging near my back door, and it sure smells nice when you walk inside!

This rack has thirty spoon slots, which holds a lot of herbs! I chose to cut sprigs that were short enough that every slot could be filled. However if preferred, fewer longer bundles could be added.
