Greetings Friends. My original post for today was an upbeat celebration of nature that included a series of photographs featuring this adorable tiny fawn that visited my garden last week. Little did I know that only a few days later, Mother Nature's darker side would ravage my community with catastrophic flooding

Let me begin by saying that I am safe and I want to thank those of you who reached out to share your concerns. Pictured below is the Guadalupe River I captured earlier this year before it rose 26 feet in 45 minutes in the early morning hours of July 4. Although it is only a few miles away, my home is on higher ground and was not damaged. While I am abundantly thankful, my heart is heavy for my community.

As of this writing, 82 fatalities have been reported with 10 girls still missing from local summer camps. The sound of helicopters can be heard overhead as search and rescue teams diligently search for survivors. You may remember the parking area murals near the river trails I walk several times during the week. The image on the bottom is how the charming bird mural looked before Friday and if you look closely at the arrow on the top photo, you can see how far the water extends.

As of this writing, there are more storms in the forecast so please pray for our community and the missing survivors.

Despite the recent devastating destruction, I want to leave you with the rest of the images that illustrate Mother Nature's peaceful side. This tiny fawn felt safe nestled in the native blue sage or tucked behind my large rosemary bushes...

...and I usually spot them during the early morning hours. This baby humored me by letting me get close enough to capture several photos, but she looked very sleepy. Mama was nowhere in sight so I went inside to let her rest peacefully.

Not much time had passed when I happened to glance out the window and saw Mama had arrived. I snapped a quick photo from my window view but they scampered off before I could get any closer. Follow me on Instagram to see more deer adventures!

Aw, that baby deer is so cute! I am so glad that you and your family were safe but I am so saddened for your community and its immense loss. I can not get over the speed and depth to which that river rose.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry about the flooding in your community. Has it ever flooded before? Glad you are on higher ground. Great picture of the little deer.
ReplyDeleteSo glad you are safe, I had no idea you were so close to the river. My heart is just broken for all those lost and those sweet children just enjoying a summer camp. Tragic.
ReplyDeleteUntil reading your blog, Cecilia, I hadn't realized the flooding was in your community. So glad you are safe and your home on higher ground. So many tragic losses and families touched by this tragedy. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
